Why does information technology disappoint or enslave us? Why do so many information systems projects collapse? How can we do better? There are many technical, social, economic and other aspects to consider. How do we ensure we take all these into account as we research IT or IS, or employ them? The philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd lends itself to generating paradigms that take multiple aspects into account. Applying Dooyeweerd's philosophies, Foundations of Information Systems: Research, Teaching and Practice introduces new multi-aspectual paradigms for understanding five main areas of importance related to IT and IS: * Using an information system or device is seen not as a technical, social or economic issue, but as multi-aspectual human functioning that has repercussions in many aspects, some of them unexpected. This covers ease of use, usefulness and virtual reality. * Developing an information system or device is seen as a multi-aspectual human process of several interwoven kinds, governed by responsible anticipation of future possibility. With this, software engineering, knowledge elicitation and project management can work in harmony. * Developing computer languages, user interface objects, inter-device protocols, etc. should take into account all aspects of human life, each aspect calling for a different translation to computer code. This provides a basis for the issues of affordance and appropriateness. * Is a computer like a human being? What are information, data and knowledge? Addressing such questions in terms of multi-aspectual meaning can circumvent the never-ending, fruitless arguments around artificial intelligence. * Impact of information technology on society, and vice versa, is of many kinds, beyond the technical, social and economic. With Dooyeweerd's aspects we can consider these in a coherent way, to generate a vision for technology that applies equally in developing and developed societies. The book sets these new paradigms in the context of extant discourse and current research within Information Systems and Technology. Adopting these paradigms promises to inspire new directions in research in each of these areas, as each makes aspects that are currently overlooked by conventional paradigms more meaningful to the researcher, developer and practitioner.
